Next up was the Keynote Speaker VVA Chapter # 1076 Brother Dick Stephans, he delivered heartfelt Speech regarding his experiences returning from Vietnam.
Happy Vietnam Veterans Day to All ! It was a war that lasted more than 10 years and cost the US 58,000 lives lost and many, many more wounded. Also, it was a time when we who served there returned to the States, finding that our individual military service was largely forgotten. In fact, to cite a personal experience, I had a close friend at the time serving the Army as a new ROTC instructor at a major State University. He was told prior to reporting for duty to wear civilian clothes and carry his military uniform to the ROTC Building on campus. He determined later, the reason was to avoid having students spitting on him. It was done because there was so much hate for the war in those days that many in uniform were retaliated against in some form or other. Today I wear this hat a lot. I do it not only because I’m proud of my service, but also because of avoiding more skin cancer. And at airports now it’s unusual when I don’t get a half dozen different people thanking me for my service. Just like the old Virginia Slims cigarette commercial of the past, “We’ve Come a Long Way, Baby.” So, on behalf of Chapter 1076 of the Vietnam Veterans of America, I sure thank the residents of the Southern Nevada Veterans Home for their service to a proud Nation and like today, during some challenging times.

Also, an added special recognition and thanks to the Medical Staff here, Food Service, Housekeeping and other Veterans Home support staff members. You all deserve a special place in
Heaven for your stellar 24/7 work.
Thank you.
