22 JAN 26 “ Let’s do Lunch” Daughters of the American Revolution

The first session of the year,” Let’s do Lunch” was a presentation of the Daughters of the American Revolution– the Meadows Chapter Las Vegas. After introductions by Neil Johnson and Denise Page a presentation was made by DAR Representatives. DAR member Stephanie Wheeler from the Fisher House, spoke about many opportunities to volunteer at the Fisher House near the VA Las Vegas. Sally Ann Kinley explained the history and eligibility requirements to join the DAR.

An excellent free lunch was provided by the Las Vegas Hospice Alliance. The“Let’s do Lunch” sessions available to any interested veteran or family. Consider joining us on the third Thursday of each month at 1200 in the American Legion Post 40 Hall Henderson.

14 JAN 26 Groundbreaking Ceremony relocation of the Nevada State Veterans Memorial

A windy groundbreaking ceremony was held at 1100 for the new home of the Nevada State Veterans Memorial relocated from outside the Grant Sawyer state building to The Thunderbird Family Sports Complex, 6105 N Durango Dr. Las Vegas.  A funding cost of $7.69 million was shared by the state of Nevada, City of Las Vegas and Mayor’s Fund for Las Vegas LIFE.

The Memorial includes statues of a Civil War soldier, a World War II soldier and a nurse, a soldier from the Vietnam War, a pilot who served in the Gulf War, and a modern-day service member representing the people currently in the military. Completion of the Memorial is projected before the end of the year. Even with the windy conditions many veteran organizations were in attendance, stood proudly and saluted during the presentation of the flag ceremony. Politicians spoke of the process of securing funding and location and then lined up with the Ceremonial Shovels and turning the first gravel over. A high school choir sang a medley of 4 service branch songs. It was a great day to be a veteran in southern Nevada and receive recognition for your time in uniform.

20 DEC 25 VVA 1076 Christmas Party

The annual 1076 Christmas Party was a great success, thanks to Fred and the team of volunteers that secured items for the raffle, prepared the food and decorated the American Legion Hall. The party started with Neil Johnson leading the group in the Pledge of Allegiance with a reminder of the POW/MIA Table followed by a short blessing. There were plenty of dinner items to choose from and a table of desserts. The party was time for camaraderie, jokes and a few war stories. A fund-raising raffle of donated items was a highlight with many items to bid on.  The Christmas party was a great way to celebrate 2025 and also the achievements of Chapter 1076.


20 N0V 25 Let’s Do Lunch – Volunteering at the Veterans Home BC

“Serving Nevada’s Heroes” was the theme for November’s lunch lecture series on the 20th. Mayra Gonzales, Volunteer Coordinator NDVS described many opportunities at the Boulder City Home to volunteer.

She explained some folks have the regular weekly job, others come during special events and others will drop it in just spent time reading a book to a veteran. Her contact email is gonzalezm@veterans.nv.gov  All are welcome to help at the Veterans home. A free lunch was provided at the lecture and the 2026 schedule is being planned. Please join us in the third Thursday of the month at noon.

13 NOV 25 Water St. Flags Down after Veterans Day

A crew of VVA 1076 volunteers removed US flags flown in honor of Veterans Day. The crew started at 0700 at the south end of Water St to Lake Mead Blvd. to remove the flags. After a breakfast followed at the Pass Casino. Thanks to all who helped !!

STORY OF A SOLDIER: U.S. ARMY ENGINEERS by RICHARD D. KEIRN – VVA 1076

Richard D. Keirn, Colonel CA-MD ARNG (Ret), Keirn helped establish the VVA Chapter 1076 in Henderson, and served as its first president. Richard, Enlisting at age 17, he served 20 years in the U.S. Army, with more than two tours in Vietnam. Recently Richard added book author to his resume, in October Barnes & Noble Press released his book STORY OF A SOLDIER: U.S. ARMY ENGINEERS. Currently, Richard is the Chief Executive Officer, Henderson Service Office ( HSO ) which helping veterans and their dependents with filing claims to the Veterans Administration and assisting them with resolving other military related concerns. 11 NOV 25 Restaurants Honor Military Veterans by offering Deals

Veterans Day is a time to pay tribute to those who have served or who are on active duty. Many area restaurants offered discounts to veterans and VVA 1076er’s were out taking advantage of them at Applebee’s, Chili’s, Chipotle, Golden Corral, IN-N-OUT Burger and Red Robin. Other businesses offered services from carwashes to haircuts. VVA 1076 would like to Salute all the businesses that support our military and veterans.

11 NOV 25 BC Veterans Home Cruise-In and Car Show

The Boulder City Cruisin Association put on a great event for the residents of Veterans Home on Veterans Day. A number of beautiful classic cars paraded and then parked for viewing. A barbecue was provided for all participants. Members of VVA 1076 visited with the veterans and one special resident Ann. Ann was all smiles surrounded by her 1076 comrades.

The Las Vegas Veterans Expo 2025 by Humana at the M Resort Casino was free community event for veterans, active-duty service members who could explore healthcare options, connect with veteran-focused organizations who support lifelong wellness.


10 NOV 25 Marine 250th Birthday at S. Nevada Veterans Home

At the Southern Nevada Veterans Home, Officers of Marine Corps League 495 escorting the cake in for the US Marine Corps 250th Birthday Ceremony. It was a wonderful ceremony, well attended and supported by several veterans groups MCL 495, Military Order of Purple Heart, NDVS, Montford Point Marines and Sagebrush Women Marine Detachment. Semper Fi Marines and Happy 250th Birthday!

8 NOV 25 Navy 250th Birthday Brunch hosted by Elks Lodge #2802

A Navy 250th Birthday Brunch was hosted by the Elks Lodge #2802 in Henderson for future, active, veterans of Coast Guard, Marines and Navy. We were honored to have young men and women in the US Marine Delayed Entry Program who are waiting for ship dates to start their Marine Enlistment. The Elks want to recognize and thank the three seagoing services.

During opening remarks, we found out about the good work the Elks do within the community. A patriotic and enjoyable brunch that was attended by a few 1076’ers, FRA also Phil Webb, who enjoyed sitting with the Marine Candidates. Well Done !!

7 NOV 25 Flags Up on Water Street

Getting ready for a busy week ahead with Marine Corps 250th Birthday and Veterans Day, VVA 1076 with DAV was putting up US Flags on Water Street at 0700 this morning. You can support many events like the VetFest– 8 NOV from 0900 to 1500 PM at Summerlin, The Downtown LV Veterans Day Parade 11 NOV at 1000, and Vet EXPO at The M Resort at 1000 to 1400. 15 NOV 1000 to 1330 The VA Medical Center is hosting a Barbecue and Car Show. Many businesses are offering free lunch or a dinner to Veterans.

18 SEP 25 Let’s Do Lunch – Veterans Benefits with Barbara Rodgick

Our speaker for September Let’s Do Lunch was Veteran Widow Barbara Rodgick who has made it her mission to teach others about the benefits available to veterans, widows and dependents.  Barbara has launched a one-woman crusade to inform all concerned about military disabilities. She passed along valuable information to aid navigating the VA Forms and sources of assistance from VSO’s. Barbara hosts a Support Group called Veterans’ Widows / Widowers which meets monthly.

12 SEP 25 Water Street Flags Down after 9- 11 Day

The VVA 1076 Flag crew assembled to take down the US flags on Water St. after 9/11 day. Afterwards it was breakfast at the Pass Casino. Next scheduled Flags up will be for National Gold Star Mothers Recognition Day on September 26, consider helping out the flag crew, details sent out before. Well Done !

7 SEP 26 Celebration for Ann Sweat at the BC Veterans Home

Ann Sweat received a surprise birthday celebration today from her 1076 Comrades. A big “Thanks” to Larry Eastman for the Army MP cookie, the Army Stuff Bear, and Necklace. Also many “Thanks” to Jan Kopacz for the ice cream for Ann. The Honor Guard and the VVA Flag crew will need to practice singing “Happy Birthday” because the performance cleared the smoking patio out once singing started. Happy Birthday Ann from your Brothers and Sisters at VVA 1076.

2 SEP 25 Water St. Flags Down after the Labor Day Weekend

The VVA 1076 Flag Crew assembled at the Pass Casino for breakfast at 0800 before removing the Flags at 0900. Two teams were able to remove the flags and store them to the next event. The next Flag posting is scheduled for September 11- Patriot Day.

31 AUG 2025 100th Birthday Celebration for WW2 Army Veteran

Members of the VVA 1076 Color Guard honored a World War II Army Veteran Edward Shipp during a celebration of his 100th Birthday. Staff Sgt. Shipp was stationed at Pearl Harbor during the war. The event was well attended and the group cheered when his certificate was presented by Michael Berge.

30 AUG 25 Flags Up on Water Street by VVA 1076

Members of VVA 1076 were up early for Flags Up on Water St. assembling 0700, the Flag Gang included Neil Johnson, Jan David Kopacz, Calvin Haggen, Mike Schwartz, Chris Gilmore, Shelly Berkowitz, Larry Eastman, Michael Berge, Phil Webb, Rick Kaufmann and Ralph Miranda. With the flags up, Water Street is ready for the Labor Day Weekend.

The gang retreated to Pass Casino for breakfast and camaraderie. Flags are scheduled to be removed Tuesday morning. Well Done !! VVA 1076

21 AUG 25 “Let’s Do Lunch”  Estate Planning

This month’s Let’s Do Lunch lecture focused on Estate Planning, Trusts and Probate. Attorney Kevin Turek from Clear Counsel Law Group covered the basics of estate planning and probate. His presentation was well received with many questions were asked at the end. Next month’s session will focus on receiving your Veterans Benefits from Barbara Rodgick. A Free Lunch was provided by the Las Vegas Hospice Alliance. Shout out to Denise Page and her crew for continuing this education series.

12 AUG 25 Boulder City Veterans Home Ice Cream Social

An appreciative crowd, music and ice cream all added up to another success by the VAA 1076. Jack Constantine coordinated with Fanny Butler to make this Ice Cream Social possible. Shelley Berkowitz received the donation of ice cream from Anderson Dairy, over 30 gallons was scooped and consume by the residents.  

Throughout the Ice Cream, songs from Elvis, Sinatra and Neil Diamond were preformed. 1076er Ann Sweat approved by clapping along to the music. 1076 Volunteers included Fred, Dave and Rick with assistance from Kathy Wiek and Francis Pinkard. The Veteran’s home provided all the supplies as well as a crew to help out . Well Done !! VVA 1076 !!

10 Aug 25 DAV National Convention 2025

DAV Chapter 12 Blackmountain Honor Guard / Color Guard standing down after opening ceremonies for 2025 DAV National Convention at the Paris Hotel. The Honor Guard Commander is Neil C. Johnson who is the President of Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 1076, Henderson, NV.

The others in the Honor Guard / Color Guard are Ricardo Portillio, Jan David Kopacz, Calvin Haggen, who are 1076ers with help from Philip Webb, and Cathleen Campbell Arment.

10 AUG 25 Agent Orange Awareness Day

Agent Orange Awareness Day –The Vietnam War may be over, but the battle continues for many Vietnam veterans. Nearly 3 million service members served in Vietnam and most returned home. But since then, thousands of Vietnam veterans have fought illnesses related to Agent Orange exposure.

7 AUG 25 Boulder City Veterans Home Cake Celebration

The Fleet Reserve Association Branch 90 hosted a cake party commemorating the 235 Birthday of the Coast Guard and Purple Heart Day. Members of VVA 1076 volunteered as well as Commander Ken Gonzalez, Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 730. The party started with FRA President Jed Levine leading the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. CG Veteran Rick Kaufmann Welcomed and Thanked the residents for their service. Rick spoke about the history Coast Guard, Commander Gonzalez spoke about the importance of remembering our heroes and the history of the Purple Heart. Two cakes were then displayed and cut. The first cut was by a 27-year RM CG Vet then Ken with a Purple Heart Veteran cut the other Cake. Attending the celebration was 1076’s Ann Sweat , who was all smiles with a visit from her friends. FRA will be back to celebrate the Navy birthday in November. The FRA is proud to host these events with assistance from other Veterans’ groups as well as the staff from the home. Well Done !!

7 AUG 25 Henderson’s Purple Heart Plaza

VVA 1076 members were at the Henderson’s Purple Heart Plaza that was filled with reflection and gratitude to honor the incredible sacrifices of our Purple Heart Recipients. The ceremony was a powerful tribute to the bravery and resilience of these military heroes who have protected our nation. Thank you to the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 730 for their ongoing dedication and partnership. Purple Heart Recipients- Your sacrifice will not be forgotten.

Afterwards they met at the Pacific Diner for breakfast.

18 JUL 25 Pinning Ceremony with Congresswoman Susie Lee

Congresswoman Susie Lee hosted a Vietnam Veterans pinning ceremony to honor our Vietnam Veterans. This pinning ceremony is to commemorate our veterans’ brave service and pay tribute to their contributions to protecting our country during the Vietnam War. Veteran who served at any time on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces, during the period of Nov. 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975 is eligible to receive one Vietnam Veteran Commemorative pin. Members of VVA 1076 witnessed the ceremony at Mountaintop Faith Ministries in Las Vegas

17 JUL 25 “Let’s Do Lunch” – Hospice vs. Palliative Care

Julys VVA 1076 Let’s do Lunch session was a presentation on Hospice versus Palliative Care. Tance Redd from Harbor Hospice layed the foundation for end-of-life planning. She discussed the decision-making process when you’re at the end of the trail. Taco lunch was provided by the Las Vegas Hospice Alliance. 15 JUL 25 VVA 1076 Member Robert Wiek “Last Salute”

Robert Wiek who was a Sergeant in the US Marines and was the VVA 1076 State Representative was laid to rest today at the Veterans Cemetery in Boulder City. In attendance, was family, friends and a number of veterans from a variety of organizations. The Patriot Guard lined the chapel.

A Flag Ceremony was done by a Marine Honor Guard with a rifle salute in the background. A poem “Reflections” was read that Robert had written with his thoughts after leaving the war in Vietnam. A graveside flutist played the Marines hymn has he was lowered. Sergeant, You are relieved, Your watch is over, Rest in Peace with your Brothers and Sisters Veterans. You will not be Forgotten!


7 JUL 25 Water St. Flags down after 4th of July Weekend

The Flag Crew started with breakfast at the Peak Casino. Three teams started out at 0830 removing the flags that lined Water St. The Flags were back in storage by 1000. Next scheduled Flag Event is in August honoring Purple Heart Veterans consider joining us. Thank you to the crew. Well done!!

3 JUL 25 Humana Veterans Expo Cannery Casino

The VVA 1076 Information Table was organized Fred with the help of Larry and Rick. We were surrounded by friends from DAV, US Vets, American League and Purple Heart. It was a great opportunity to learn about options for your Healthcare, also many free items were available during the show from the Vendors that included AT&T, Energy Workers, American Legacy Homecare, Smiths Pharmacy and Palms Mortuary.

If you couldn’t make the show Information from vendors will be available on the website” Veterans Benefits” page. We were able to meet veterans and handed out warm socks. Well Done!! VVA 1076.

2 JUL 25 Water St. District- Flags Up for the 4th of July

Members of VVA 1076 mounted the US flags on the light poles lining Water Street in Honor of the Fourth of July. The Crew was led by Fred, and it rained a little which didn’t stop them from going up!

28 JUN 25 1076 Member Robert Wiek U.S. Marine Veteran Passed

Lifetime VVA 1076 Member Robert Wiek in his own quiet way, battled to the end.  Roberts’ wife Kathy was at his side for all his medical challenges.

19 JUN 25 “LET’s do LUNCH” series ALPHA – STIM

VVA 1076 continued its Veterans Benefits Education Session today covered Alpha-Stim which is a Drug Free Medical Device used for the treatment of Anxiety, Insomnia and Pain. Area Representatives Laura Coffman presented the product which has proven to be a great benefit for Veterans. ALPHA – STIM might be the right treatment for you. The device may be prescribed by Medical Providers through the VA Medical System. A buffet of Mexican food was available during the presentation. Check the website for the next education session.

17 JUN 25 Flag Work Party Part 2

1000 back at the American Legion building for Part 2 of the work party. The crew received instructions from Fred and began reassembling the flags. Two Kaufmann grandsons joined in, both Roman and Elliot helped also kept track of how many flags were ready. The flags were transported back to the storage room at Wells Fargo. The flags will look great for the Fourth of July weekend. Will done. BZ !!

16 JUN 25 Water Street Flags Down after Flag Day and Work Party

The VVA 1076 crew assembled and removed the flags from Water Street at 0700 afterwards breakfast at the Pass. The crew assembled again at 1000 the American Legion building for a work party. The task was to remove over 100 flags from their mounting poles for an annual washing. Jan volunteered to wash the flags at his home and have them ready for reassembly the next day.

5 JUN 25 An afternoon with Ann at the BC Veterans Home

Members of 1076 spent their afternoon visiting with Ann Sweat at the Boulder City Vet Home. Ann has been recuperating from a recent issue. She is in great spirits and grateful to have visitors. Anytime you find yourself in BC consider taking the time to see Ann.

It’s recommended calling first, as she might be out on a shopping spree. Her room is in the Eagle’s Nest section 451B. Ann is a big part of the 1076 family, and we have her 6. Be sure to share a smile with her soon.

3 JUN 25 Water Street “Flags Down“

After the Memorial Day weekend, the Flags on Water St. need go back into storage for the next holiday. Members of VVA 1076 first assembled for the power breakfast at the Pass Casino. At 0900 the flags started coming down and task was completed by 1000. Well done !!


31 MAY 25 Veterans Memorial Day Barbecue and Resource Fair

The City of North Las Vegas hosted a Memorial Day Barbecue and Resource Fair at the Veterans and Community Resource Center. The event, welcomed veterans, their families, and community members to connect with local organizations offering support services tailored to the unique needs of the veteran community. Also featured a car show, showcasing vehicles from the North Las Vegas Fire Department and Nellis Air Force Base.

29 MAY 25 “ Let’s do Lunch”  AAVD Dental Program

The May installment of “Let’s do Lunch” veteran benefits lectures was focused on the Adopt a Vet Dental Program. Caleb Gonzalez, presented information about this dental program to help under insured veterans. Their motto “Together, we can change a veteran’s life with a smile!” AAVD phone (702)268-2863. Welcome by Philip Webb- USMC Veteran, Palm Henderson Mortuary

Palm Henderson Mortuary and Cemetery hosted its fourth annual outdoor Fallen Heroes Commemorative Ceremony on Saturday, May 24, 2025. The day started beautifully and with anticipation, as the final details were coming together for this unique and humbling service to honor our Nation’s fallen heroes. While final details were in progress, the Scouts of America placed over 500 flags to honor the veterans laid to rest in Palm Henderson Cemetery. As guests arrived at the cemetery and walked towards the ceremony circle, they were welcomed by the view of the US Flag lines of Honor; again by the Scouts, their families, and other patriotic guests. As guests made their way to their seats, a multi-branch US Military Color Guard stood tall and proud. The service area was staged with reverence, including a military funeral vehicle provided by the Firefighter Memorial Transport to represent the sacrifices of those being honored. One of the VVA 1076 family members, Ann is recovering at the Boulder City Veterans Home. A number of 1076 Members stopped in for a visit. She is doing great, then the biggest smile when she saw her friends.

21 MAY 25 Pizza Party Veterans Home Boulder City

VVA 1076 sponsored a Pizza Party at the Veterans Home BC. It’s an opportunity to celebrate our Veteran Heroes along with entertainment some high stepped the ladies. From the smiles on the faces they were very well received. The veterans shared stories of their time in uniform. We shared a tennis the next time pizza is served.

On Water Street District, Henderson installation by Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 1076, Thank you Cal Haggen, Philip Webb, Ralph Miranda, Michael Schwartz and Shelly Berkowitz helping the city of Henderson honor Armed Forces Day and continues through Memorial Day. Well Done Crew !!

1 MAY 25 Chapel Services for 7 Unaccompanied Veterans

Chapel Services were for 7 Unaccompanied Veterans. An unaccompanied Veteran is a Veteran who does not have family to attend the burial. To make sure no Veteran is forgotten the local veterans groups provide witness for their final rest. Volunteers from the AL, DVA, VVA, Women Veterans and the Patriot Guard execute the Chapel Services. 7 veterans were honored, 2 Coast Guard and 5 Marines. During the ceremony USCG Vet Rick Kaufmann, VVA1076 had the honor of receiving the US Flag for the two Coast Guard Fallen, USMC Vet Robert Wiek, VVA1076 received the US Flag for the 5 Marines. The Coast Guard provided an Honor Guard from Northern California. Two other Coast Guard veterans also witnessed the ceremony, Adam Duran and Mike Barth. About 100 folks witnessed this solemn event with many of them in Red Shirts. Bravo Zulu to all the volunteers who routinely participate in the ceremonies and especially the Coast Guard representatives. Rest in Peace my Brothers, We got the Watch…

VVA #1076 Volunteer Opportunities Chapter volunteers are needed for a variety of events.  Events range from Outreach Booths, Unaccompanied Veteran Services and Community Support Events.
